Reasons Why Uncle Frank Is the Real Villain of 'Home Alone'

Like much of the film, most of the sequence was shot with low, wide angles that, according to journalist Darryn King, "capture the action as if a child were perceiving it". John Candy was available for only one day to film his scenes, which took 23 hours to shoot. He was paid only $414, since he did the film as a favor to Hughes. In return, he was the only actor Hughes allowed to go off-script; according to Columbus, all his dialogue was improvised. As it turned out, they couldn't actually shoot inside the residential home they found.

It was built in the gym and empty swimming pool of the former New Trier High School building, previously used by Hughes for Uncle Buck and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where the production company had already set up its offices. The tree house in the back yard was built specifically for the film and dismantled after filming ended. The church exteriors were shot at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmette, Illinois, while the interiors were shot at Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park, Illinois. As Christmas nears, holiday movie fans almost always turn on their favorite Christmas movies to watch ad nauseam, and one of the movies that's often pulled out the most is Home Alone. The movie is now 32 years old, but it remains a favorite of people everywhere where the little boy who is left home alone has to fight to protect himself from two burglars known as the Wet Bandits. The movie even remained popular enough to warrant a remake last year called Home Sweet Home Alone.

Kevin's mother wanted to get back home to her son so bad, she made a bargain with the devil in the airport. That is at least one interpretation of the scene where she met John Candy's Gus. Drewgarr mentioned on Reddit that Kate said she would "sell her would to the devil himself" to get back home to her son. One thing that the internet is known for is for being utterly filled to the brim with twisted and dark theories about our favourite childhood films. While 51 West 95th Street does exist in real-life, the actual filming location was Brownstone Street on the Universal Studios backlot in Los Angeles.

Matt Talbot from Simcoe.com said that the Wet Bandits were "fantastic" and "never old" on "repeat viewings". Michael Walsh of Nerdist noted the church scene as "One of the best, most touching scenes ". By the time the film had run its course in theaters, Home Alone was the third-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, as well as in the United States and Canada behind only Star Wars ($322 million at the time) and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial ($399 million at the time), according to the home video box. Box Office Mojo estimates that the film sold over 67.7 million tickets in the United States. It was also the highest-grossing Christmas film until it was surpassed by Dr. Seuss' The Grinch in 2018.

Unbeknownst to anyone, the home has been targeted to be burglarized while the family is away in France. Legends of fantasy float around all the time with classic movies, and one about Home Alone is that Uncle Frank, who was in France with the family, orchestrated the plot to burglarize the home prior to leaving. The legend began when it was discovered that many changes were made to the original script, and the original intention was to have Uncle Frank as the villain. Bamman certainly believes it was a “terrible mistake” to jettison the McCallister family cast, particularly as it would have been an opportunity to further flesh out his role. Then again, in doing so, it may even have turned Uncle Frank into a more likable character, losing his villain status in the process. Also given the visibility of Uncle Frank and the film’s success, Bamman hoped the role would lead to bigger and better things but, despite a solid career of film, TV and stage work in the years since, it’s not quite worked out that way.

Columbus was later able to get in touch with Steven Spielberg, who helped him contact John Williams to produce the final score. Traditional Christmas songs, such as "O Holy Night" and "Carol of the Bells", are featured prominently in the film, as well as the film's theme song "Somewhere in My Memory". The soundtrack was released by Sony Classical Records on cassette on December 4, 1990, and on CD on May 27, 2015.

Kevin tricks them into thinking that his family is still home, forcing them to postpone their plans to rob the McCallister house. There are so many things wrong with this picture, which was brought to our attention by the folks at SlashFilm. The biggest problem being, of course, the fact that Uncle Frank is an immature creep for yanking down his nephew's pants, all in the name of a stupid gag. It certainly wouldn't be out of character for, say, his brother Buzz to stoop to such lengths.

The conceit of the picture is that young Kevin McCallister is accidentally left behind when his large, extended family all travel to visit relatives in France for Christmas. Kevin, just the night before, wished that he could be "home alone," so the young kid thought that his wish had come true. As a kid, Home Alone wasn’t just the funniest Christmas movie I had ever seen, it was also the scariest.

S one character who has never earned even a tiny moment of affection. Why, Uncle Frank, of course—aka the true villain of the entire series. It just doesn't seem to be supportable by anything that Uncle Frank was ever intended to be the "real" villain behind the movie's plot.

Inside the Elf 2 Movie Will Ferrell Turned Down

Uncle Frank is very prominently shown to have a natural hatred for Kevin and jealousy of his brother's income. Luminescence9 speculated on Reddit that Uncle Frank may have hired Harry and Marv to rob the house and make Kevin the prime suspect, as he was the only one alone in the house, and a kid, making the crime that much more believable. A very weird and unorthodox reaction to a simple police visit leads the internet users to believe that Peter is in fact a gang leader, which could explain his large income. Add in an uncle that seems very dubious and one son who seems completely sadistic, and this family might be married to the mob. T contribute the comedic relief or begrudging likability that Marv or Harry brought to the Home Alonefilms.

But is it enough to suggest he called his mates Harry and Marv all the way from Paris, telling them to go rob the house and to harm Kevin while they're at it if needs be? In order to get the most authentic performance possible, Joe Pesci did his best to avoid Macaulay Culkin on the set so that the young actor would indeed be afraid of him. A scout for John Hughes – who produced Home Alone – had approached the then owners, John and Cynthia Abendshien, about using the house in another Macaulay Culkin film, Uncle Buck. The house sprawls over 4,250 square foot and is blocks away from Lake Michigan and the affluent suburb’s village center. Home Alone, which was filmed in 1990, just one year after the previous owners took over the property. At the time of the film’s release, the home had an estimated value of about $900,000, an exorbitant sum for the beginning of the 1990s.

Telling your own kids off for misbehaving is one thing, and it’s not what parenting experts advise anyway, favoring talking through how they should have behaved rather than focusing on what they actually did. But telling someone else’s kid off, particularly in their own house, in a manner dripping with contempt and disdain? Kevin isn’t blameless in the kitchen situation — a plain cheese pizza from a major chain is a ridiculous thing to order. Kevin’s cousin Fuller (played by Macaulay Culkin’s younger brother, future Succession star Kieran Culkin) similarly knows that he wets the bed but goes hog wild on the Pepsi anyway. Kevin is surrounded by people actively making life worse for him, yet when he responds, he’s insulted and embarrassed with none of that taken into account. The sad thing about this alleged legend is that even if it had a shred of credibility, it would change the entire storyline of the movie and demote Culkin and Pesci to lesser roles.

While preparing to leave, Frank did not let his nephew Kevin watch a movie. There are fifteen people in this house and you're the only one who has to make trouble. Given how successful he’s been in keeping everyone out of his bed, you can’t help but think that it’s deliberate.

He Makes Kevin Feel Excluded

And the second movie starts with Peter, very suspiciously, leaving Kevin behind, on purpose in the airport. These scenarios in the movies further form as evidence of this extremely probable theory, which is not as far-fetched as it would seem at first-glance. Again, going to the family, this theory proposes that Peter McCalsiter shares no bond or loving relationship with his son, Kevin, rather seeks to, somehow, get rid of him.

But his uncle, who's supposed to be a "better example" for the rest of the kids? The idea was scrapped, as Pesci and Stern refused to reprise their roles, and wanted to pursue other projects, and Kieran felt he couldn’t follow in his brother’s footsteps as the lead. Hughes then wrote an entirely different screenplay with no characters from the first two films. For the first time, the original “Home Alone” house will become available on Airbnb for a $25 overnight stay, if you’re fast enough to book it.
